Manchester United are reportedly planning to see off Chris Smalling on a permanent deal this summer transfer.
The English international was deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford for the 2019-20 season and was allowed to join Roma on a season-long loan.
The 30-year-old has been impressive for the Italian outfit, making 28 appearances in all competitions, this course to suggestions that he could join the Serie A giants permanently this summer.
Paulo Fonseca’s side will be unable to afford to sign the English international ahead of the 2020-21 season, but according to the Evening Standard, the red Devils are still hoping to move the defender on.
The report claims that Manchester united are looking to raise additional funds due to the financial problems caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and have identified Smalling as a potential outgoing.
Roma are also believed to be exploring the possibility of taking the former Fulham youngster, who is out of contract at Old Trafford in June 2022, on another season-long loan.
